Reliable Railway

Railways play an important role in the transport system of Russia.

Recently several modern ports and terminals have been built in Russia and now old port complexes are being expanded, new complexes are being built. These facts require mushroom growth of railway infrastructure.

One of the first projects realized in this field was the project for construction of approaches to the new seaport located on island Vysotsky, the Leningrad Region, and distribution terminal complex for petroleum derivatives handling named LUKOIL-II. The project has become a pilot one to attract outward investments in development of railway infrastructure.

Attraction of outward investments in railway industry sector is considered by RZD Company as the most important development strategy. This approach is successfully realized in construction of commercial seaport Ust-Luga, to whose terminals Oktyabrskaya Railway is now constructing close-range and long-range approaches.

“It is development of ports what clearly shows realization of private-public partnership”, says Vladimir Yakunin, the Chairman of JSC RZD.

Development of capacities of the Great Port of Saint-Petersburg is also continued. Railway export volume that passes through the port becomes greater every year. Considerable part of freight traffic consists of oil cargoes and coal, ferrous and nonferrous metals and shipping containers. Oktyabrskaya railway actively develops approaches to the port.

The task of management of goods traffic on the territory of a megapolis
is a global and complex nature, that’s why the Government of the city in coordination with JSC RZD has made a decision on elaboration of the Master plan of Saint-Petersburg railway terminal development. The customer of the project is JSC RZD, a part of the Master plan development expenses was taken by the municipal budget.

One of the effective measures required for servicing of increasing shipping containers traffic is start-up of advanced container train coursing from the port of Saint-Petersburg to Moscow. Its travel time over railway is 16 hours and total time required for delivery of containers from the terminal to the Consignee's storehouse located in the Capital is only three days.

These and other projects have been included into the Development Strategy of the Railway Transport in the Russian Federation till 2030, clearance value of which is estimated as RUR 13.7 trn. In the result of their realization an infrastructural base for long-term development of Russian economy and integrated development of progressive economic regions will be created.
